Types of Dental Braces

Types of Braces

Dental braces are widely used orthodontic devices to fix teeth misalignment and misplacement problems. There are different types of braces, each of which is associated with a unique set of pros and cons. In this blog, we have compared different types of braces in detail so that you can take them into consideration before settling for the type of brace you want to opt for.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of dental braces that have been in existence for more than a hundred years. These involve brackets and wires that are usually made of metals. These are the least expensive types of brace and, therefore, the most viable option for many patients. Traditional braces are much more effective for treating extreme overcrowding as compared to the other types of braces. However, they are the most noticeable type, and some people may feel anxious or have low esteem about their appearance after wearing them.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces or clear braces are made of ceramic material and, therefore, blend very well with the tooth color. It makes them less noticeable, and as they are not much more expensive than traditional metal braces, they are often favored by adult orthodontic patients. Ceramic dental braces have proved very efficient for straightening teeth and fixing bite issues.

As they are made of clear material, they don’t give an unpleasant appearance of a mouth filled with metal parts, unlike traditional braces. They don’t irritate the teeth and gums, and after wearing them for a few weeks, you get comfortable with them. However, these dental braces can become stained if not properly cared for.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are the least common orthodontic tools; though they have the same components as the conventional braces, they are attached to the back of the teeth and are not visible from the outside. As they come in direct contact with the tongue, they are more uncomfortable, but they are known to be efficient for correcting orthodontic issues. Like traditional braces, these dental  braces also demand special hygiene requirements.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are very similar to metal and ceramic braces, except for the fact they use clips to hold the wire of braces in a place instead of elastic bands. Due to this, the pressure is distributed more evenly throughout the teeth and makes the system much less painful than other types of braces. This type of orthodontic corrector is most popular among patients who are very sensitive to discomfort and want fewer office visits. Self-ligating braces are easy to clean and easy to adjust, and therefore, they don’t require long orthodontic appointments. They are a cost-effective solution for severe cases that may not respond well to clear aligner treatments.

Invisalign and clear aligners

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment is an aesthetic and comfortable orthodontic practice to straighten teeth without braces. These are very thin, clear, removable, and intimately approximated to the teeth. Invisalign and clear aligners have grown very popular over the past couple of decades for their invisibility and removability. In addition, they provide a greater degree of freedom in movement and facilitate good oral hygiene. They work great for moderate misalignment and overcrowding issues and are very suitable for those patients who had braces in the past and need a final touch-up. But they cannot address the severe cases properly and don’t work if not worn enough.
