11 Most Common Mistakes To Avoid While Brushing

Tooth brushing techniques

What was your age when you started brushing? I guess we don’t even remember, right!  brushing teeth is so much easy, but some brushing blunders can ruin our teeth and gums.

Here are the 11 common mistakes to avoid while brushing

  •  Using the wrong brush

60% of people do not understand which brush is good for tooth brushing techniques.  Using the wrong brush may attract dental problems that may or may not be noticeable; for example, your teeth might bleed while brushing with a hard brush, and if you ignore it may give you a gum sore. The dentist advised using a soft-bristled brush.

So whenever you brush your teeth, just be aware that it is not rash to your teeth or gums, and it removes the plaque and bacteria substantially.

  •  Brushing teeth In wrong motions

Typically, we must brush our teeth slowly, circular motion while brushing on each tooth. But while conducting a survey, we found that most people do it in the wrong way. Some do not even remember how they do it, and some do not bother about adopting the right tooth brushing techniques.

Brushing in haphazard, criss-cross ways hurts gums and does not cleanse teeth gently. In contrast, the slow-motion circular motion ablutes teeth gently while pushing the dirt out of teeth’ crevices. The best way to brush your teeth is to place brush 45 degree angle to the gums. Brush outer, inner, and the chewing surface of teeth.

  •  Using an electric brush

Some people are thankful for electronic brushes because first, it saves their time, second, it saves effort. But it is a wrong perception. The electronic brushes execute uniform motions and therefore do not understand which teeth need more cleansing. On the contrary, manual brushing has a greater scope of understanding which teeth require how much brushing while modulating motion and speed of brushing.

  •  Giving a child an adult brush before 7 years of age

Children need an ultra-soft bristle brush until ten. But we found that most children start brushing with adult ones from six years onwards. This is because their gums are tender, and milk teeth fall and replace with permanent ones during that period. Hard bristles of the adult brushes can abrupt the process of permanent tooth eruption and peel off tender gums, making them prone to teeth distancing and cavities.

Therefore, you must talk to the dentist and seek a dentist-recommended toothbrush brand for your child especially.

  •  The wrong toothpaste

Kids’ toothpaste has a different composition than the adult one. Typically, a kids’ toothpaste is fortified with fluoride to keep cavities away. However, kids love sweets, and therefore brushing with adult toothpaste will do nothing to eliminate bacterial germination, later causing cavities.

  • Rushing while brushing

We must brush for at least two minutes. Falling short of time, we save our time by brushing and suffering tooth loss. Either we are too harsh, or we brush inadequately, defeating the purpose of brushing.

  • Avoid brushing on the backside of teeth.

Typically, we brush the front part of teeth and not the posterior part. The posterior part is equally exposed to acidic saliva, bacterial germination, and food deposits forming plaque or tartar(a hard yellowish layer called plaque on it, which later converts to tartar). Hence, while brushing, we must also care to brush the posterior teeth and teach the same practice in kids.

Assignment: Take a hand mirror and try to see the posterior part of your front teeth, and note down your observation.

  •  Brushing for too long

Normally kids stagnant the foam in their mouth for very long, or they keep brushing until reminded by parents to wash their mouth. Overbrushing scraps off sensitive enamel layer that protect teeth from sensitivity. Your teeth will be sensitive and lose luster if the enamel is gone.

  •  Brushing once a day

All dentists recommend brushing twice a day. One in the morning and one before going to bed.

While sleeping, saliva stagnates in the mouth that leaches the teeth. Morning brushing ablutes and refreshes the mouth from bad breath and bacteria germinating in saliva. Whereas brushing before bed will wash away food particles stuck in the teeth crevices, leaving them fresh.

  •  Not changing our brush frequently

“One of our clients had a rough jawline and multiple dental issues. When we asked a few questions, his reply astounded us. He said he was brushing with the same brush for the last six months”- Dentist From City Dental Care Team.

Dentists advise changing toothbrushes quarterly. And use only a good-quality toothbrush. If the person suffers any dental problem or has fitted orthodontic devices recently, they are advised to use only a dentist-recommended toothbrush and toothpaste. Its always better to change your brush after any major illness.

  •  Not minding gum line while brushing

Often people brush harshly on the gumline and notice gum inflammation or receding gums as a few problems. This also leads to loss of enamel of teeth leading to noches in the teeth at gum level. The cause is deep-rooted in the wrong tooth brushing techniques for a prolonged time that hampers oral hygiene. Teeth without brushing would look like teeth of apes. So, it is important to brush twice a day, consciously, with the right techniques. Our team of City Dental Care provides you with holistic dental care, right from diagnosis to complete treatment.
